Villa Balbiano Wedding Flowers: A Garden After the Spring Rain

There is a particular moment in a garden just after a spring shower. The air is cool and clean, petals are heavy with water, colours look softer and somehow brighter at once, and every surface seems to hold a little of the sky. That moment became the heart of this wedding at Villa Balbiano on Lake Como. Planned by Wow Wedding and photographed by Roman Ivanov, the day was designed by us around one idea: a garden after the spring rain, inspired by the paintings of Claude Monet.

The Vision: Monet's Garden After the Rain

Monet's gardens are about light, water and colour dissolving into one another. Nothing is rigid; flowers blur at the edges, reflections matter as much as the blooms themselves, and the eye drifts rather than stops. We wanted guests to feel that same impressionist softness from the moment they arrived.

So rather than placing arrangements on the villa, we planted a garden into it, and gave that garden a story. Rain has just passed. Water is running through the flower beds, gathering as it goes, and flowing toward a still pond, the kind of quiet, water-lily mood that fills Monet's garden scenes. Every element of the design, from the ceremony aisle to the dinner tables, followed that thread, so the day read as one continuous, rain-freshened landscape rather than a series of separate decorations.

Villa Balbiano made the perfect canvas. Its lawns run down to the water, its stone pillars frame the lake, and the lake itself adds the shimmer and reflected light that any Monet-inspired design needs.

The Ceremony Aisle: Streams Flowing Toward the Pond

Seen from above, the concept becomes clear. The aisle is a garden path lined with flower beds of garden roses, tulips and lilies, planted low and loose so they seem to spill across the lawn the way flowers do after a shower. Running through the beds are mirrored streams. They are not simply decorative: they represent rainwater flowing through the garden, catching the sky as it moves.

All of that water leads somewhere. At the end of the aisle sits a rectangular pond that we built especially for this wedding, the still point where the streams arrive. It gives the whole ceremony a destination and a calm centre, and it brings that unmistakable Monet feeling of flowers meeting water.

Instead of rows of chairs, guests sat on velvet poufs set among the flowers, as if they had paused in the garden to watch the light change. Beyond, the lakeside stone pillars and the open view of Lake Como formed the backdrop, and we kept the florals around them soft so the lake could finish the picture.

Evening: Candlelight on a Rain-Washed Garden

Monet returned to the same scenes again and again to see how they changed with the light, and we designed this garden to do the same. As evening fell, taper candles came to life among the pastel garden roses. The blush, peach and butter tones deepened in the warm glow, and the mirrored surfaces picked up the flicker of flame where they had held the sky by day.

The stone pillars turned to silhouettes against the dusk over the lake. Candlelight lets a single design live twice, once in daylight and once by flame, and it gave Roman Ivanov an entirely different, more painterly mood to capture without changing a thing.

Dinner Under Bell Lanterns

For dinner, the garden followed guests to the table. Serpentine tables curved across the lawn like a stream finding its way, so conversation flowed along the bends and every seat had its own glimpse of the lake. Above them, white bell lanterns hung from arches entwined with greenery, like oversized spring blooms nodding after the rain and softening the light as night came on.

Along the tables, blush and butter-yellow tapers rose in clusters between garden roses, and the flowers didn't stop at the tablecloth's edge. They ran from the tables down onto the lawn, blurring the line between dining room and garden, just as an impressionist painting blurs the line between one colour and the next. The finishing touch was in the details: a sprig of lily of the valley resting on a blue scalloped plate at the place settings, the blue a gentle echo of water.

The Palette and the Flowers

A garden after the rain has its own colours: nothing harsh, everything slightly washed and luminous. We built the palette to feel exactly that way:

  • Ivory (#F0E8E1), the pale, clearing sky and the calm base of linens and lanterns
  • Butter (#DFCC84), the first warm light breaking through
  • Peach (#CD9471), a sun-kissed accent through the garden roses
  • Blush (#DCB1AB), the romantic heart of the design
  • Lilac (#D1B0C0), a cool, misty note straight from Monet's garden
  • Sage (#9D9D7D), wet greenery tying everything to the earth

The flowers carried these tones: garden roses for their fullness and fragrance, tulips for movement, lilies for height and elegance, and white ranunculus for their layered, papery petals. Because the colours sit so close to one another, they melt together the way brushstrokes do in an impressionist painting, gentle and full of light rather than busy. If you are dreaming up your own colour story, our Bloom Calendar shows which flowers are at their best in each season in Italy.

Tips for Couples Planning a Villa Balbiano Wedding

  1. Start with a story. A clear concept, like a garden after the spring rain, makes every decision easier, from flowers to seating to candles.
  2. Let the lake lead. The lakeside pillars and open views are a ready-made backdrop. Design toward them, and keep tall arrangements away from your guests' sightlines.
  3. Think in landscapes, not centrepieces. Villa Balbiano's lawns suit flower beds, drifts, water features and low plantings that make the whole garden feel dressed.
  4. Plan for two lights. Your ceremony and dinner will be seen by day and by candlelight. Choose a palette and reflective elements that look beautiful in both.
  5. Rethink the seating. Velvet poufs or serpentine tables change how guests move and connect, and are worth discussing early with your planner.
  6. Choose your season with your flowers. Spring brings garden roses, tulips, ranunculus and lily of the valley. Lean into what is naturally at its peak.
  7. Build your team early. Close collaboration between planner, photographer and florist is what makes a design feel seamless. This wedding came together thanks to Wow Wedding and Roman Ivanov.
